Blog Response #3

Stotan!, Chinese Handcuffs, Running Loose, and Staying Fat for Sarah Byrnes all involve intense topics that add to the plot.  Talk about the point in which you became hooked into your book.  What did Chris Crutcher do to hook you? Describe any moment or moments in the book where you didn't want to put the book down.  What will you always remember about this book?

  1. I am reading Running Loose. The point in which I got hooked into the book, I would say is when Lednecky talked too the football team at the beginning of the football season when the whole team sat on the bleachers and he gave them the speech about winning the third straight title in a row. It hooked me because I could relate too it from when I played football. I didn't want to put the book down when Louie heard that Becky had gotten in the crash. I knew something bad was going to happen too her some time in the book and when I learned that it was a car crash I wanted too see what would happen and what his reaction would be. I will always remember the drive that Louie had throughout the book he always had a lot of drive towards something whether it was football, Becky, or Track, and that is what I will always remember about Running Loose.

    1. In my book it wasn't a car crash but Jeff one of the character in the book got sick at one of the swim meets after that he's been in the hospital and it hasn't said what was wrong with him only his parents know so I really want find out what's wrong with him.

    2. The crash was certainly a sudden event that I will definitely remember, and it was a great hook. I didn't want to put down the book after reading about Boomer smashing into Washington and Louie quitting the team.

    3. I agree with you Ryker on how much drive Louie showed throughout the story. It is very clear that Louie has a lot of "guts" and heart for things that he cares about.

  2. i am reading the book stotan. the point that hooked me in is when i read the part of nortie getting abused by his dad and the start of stotan week. this was all very interesting to me and it made me start to like the book. stotan week made me want to not put the book down it was the big part of the book and a very important part of it. i will remember nortie because of his strength to go through everything he has with stotan week and his dad abusing him.

    3. In my book a similar situation arose, and a major character was shown to have been heavily abused in her early years. I totally understand what you mean by getting hooked when a character brings up a topic such as that.

  3. I am reading the book Staying Fat for Sarah Byrnes. I think where i got hooked was when Sarah actually started talking again. It hooked me in because the hole book we didnt know why she stopped talking or if she even could talk and when she finally talks again it changes the hole book. The parts in the book that i didnt want to put the book down is when there in class and they are having there debate discussions because its always nice to see who has the better arguments. There really isnt anything in this book that i will always remember.

    1. I agree with what Conner said as well when they were having debate in class and things started to get really intense, we finally heard what Jody had to say as well. Also, when Sarah wasnt talking that hooked me because i just wanted to know why she stopped talking.

  4. I am reading Staying Fat for Sarah Byrnes, I got hooked when Sarah stopped talking and when Jody said she got an abortion because I knew that things were going to change. Things changed by having Sarah's dad becoming suspicious with her and Eric and now Jody and Eric are a thing now. Chris Crutcher hooked me by making everything relatable and by having this whole story take place with high school kids. The moment I did not wanna put this book down is when Sarah's dad started to think that something was up with her and Eric. I will remember how easy all these terrible things can happen to people my age.

  6. I am reading stotan. A stotan is a cross between a stoic and a spartan. Stotan week is over but it goes outside of the pool the boys are all stotan because of things going on in their life. The book hooked me when they started talking about stotan week and how no one knew what it was going to be about. I didn't walk to put the book down during the part about Nortie getting beat up. I will always remember this book for the tough patches that the boys have been through.

  7. I am reading running loose. when I got hooked in the book was when boomer hit the kid hard in a football game. I was hooked at that moment because the coach wanted the kid out and every one on the team did not say anything besides Louie. after boomer annihilated the kid Louie flipped out in front of every one at the football game. I got hooked at that moment because that is when all the drama started.

    4. I agree with you that Boomer hitting Washington was probably one of the biggest "hooks" in the book. You could even say it was the ultimate turning point where Louie flipped out and stood up for what he believed and didn't back down to anyone for what he thought.

  8. I am reading Staying Fat for Sarah Byrnes. I don't think that the book is very good and I could've put it down any part but there was one good part and that was when we found out that Sarah's dad was the one that burned her. My Group and I kinda figured that her dad did it because she told everyone that when she was 3 or 4 she spilled a pot of spaghetti on herself and got burned. We didn't think that it made much sense so we guessed her dad did it.

    2. It was the same way with my book in the way I could have put it down at almost any point other than the climax. At certain points, I really wanted to stop reading because the parts about incest and rape really made me uncomfortable. The climax on the other hand was one of the most intense I have ever read.

  9. I am reading running loose and the moment i got hooked into the book is when they started talking about football. football is a really big interest for me. so when they started talking about football i got interested right away. I dint want to put the book down when i reading about beckys crash with the bridge. it was the biggest event in the book so far, like someone in the book died. i just wanted to keep reading to find out what was going to happen next. i will always remember the crash in the book. Its a crazy sad experience having a loved one die in a car accident.

  11. I'm reading the book Stotan and I don't have much left to read but I finally fully understand what a stotan is and how the book revolves around it. I think that's when the book hooked me because almost all the character are a stotan. They are brave and some of them had something tragic happen to them. That is what I like about the book is the characters share their stories. Now Jeff is in the hospital and no one knows why except his parents and max. so it was hard for me to put the book done because I want to know why. I will always remember the friendship in this book because they were always there for each other and they respected each other.

    1. All of the characters went through hardships too. Almost all of them become stronger in the end and came out better people. In my book though, it was one or two people who were there for everyone else. They kept everyone alive and together.

  12. There were many intense topics in Chinese Handcuffs, some that I almost did not want to read about. They included molestation, drugs, rape and suicide. All of these topics had their places embedded in the book, and it would not be the same without them. The points where they talked about suicide, whether it actually happened, or there was a close attempt, I was unable to but the book down. The sheer amount of details provided when it was happening, was absolutely brilliant. Reading what the character was thinking when shit hits the fan. I could not stop reading when there were two lives hanging in the balance, with Dillon's grip strength the only thing keeping the two of them alive. I will always remember the biggest lesson in this book. No matter how big the challenge, or how you go about tackling it, if you persist, you will always beat it given time.

    3. Quinton I completely agree. During the difficult parts of molestation, drugs, rape, and suicide it was hard for me to keep reading but at the same time I did not want to put the book down. I also agree with your main lesson of the book, through all of the hardships that Jennifer and Dillon went through they did not give up. They went through their trials and did not give up, they pushed through.

  13. I am reading staying fat for Sarah Byrnes . I think what hooked me into my book was learning more about Sarah and her backstory . I suspected early on that what Sarah said happened to her the " spaghetti accident " wasn't really what happened . I was also interested when I learned that Sarah wasn't talking and immediately wanted to know why and if it was connected to what happened . The moments where I didn't want to my book down where when Sara started talk to Eric and telling the truth about what happened and when Eric gets information from Dale because you learned a lot about her past and what happened. I also liked to parts during the CAT class because their conversations were very interesting and connected to what was actually happening in their lives . The thing I will always remember about this book are the characters , I really like most of them and I am interested to see how their story's will connect as I get get further into the book

  14. The moment Chris Crutcher hooked me into the book Running Loose was around chapter 5, when the whole ‘’Washinton thing’’ came up. I couldn't put the book down when coach Lednecky talked to the whole football team in the gym about hurting the best football player of the other team to win the Championship for the third time. The coach was so possessed about winning that he forgot about everything else. Unfortunately, there are some kids like Boomer in the team who do everything they get told without thinking about it much. The plot is thrilling, interesting and easy to read. And I wanted to know so bad what is going on in the next few chapters so I kept reading them without a break. The chapter about the football game against Salmon River was so engrossing, because the readers don’t know when Boomer is going to hurt Washington. The readers also don’t know what is going to happen next, how bad Washington got hurt and how Louie reacts on this. Overall after reading chapter 5, Chris Crutcher really hooked me into Running Loose.

The part that got me hooked was when Jennifer was explaining how her dad only shows he loves her when he sneaks into her room at night and touches her inappropriately. I didn't see this part coming at all because I thought this book was just going to be about Jennifer playing basketball. I got hooked in the book Stotan, when Nortie's dad figured out he was dating a African american girl, because his dad hit Nortie and led to him moving out and his mom also moved out because of it. 21. I am reading the book Stotan. The point in when I got hooked to my book was when they started Stotan Week and it got interesting because I wanted to know what it was all about. Chris Crutcher gave us small hints as to what it was about, and he also kept showing us the personal lives of the characters in the book, some of them seemed more interesting than others so the characters also hooked me. There was only one or two times that I didn’t want to put the book down and that was the times where Nortie was talking about his abusive father, and the time he told his friends about his deceased brother who committed suicide because of their father. A spot in the book that i didn't want to put the book down is when Jennifer actually wants to get help with her issues so she doesn't get traumatize for the rest of her life, she never wanted help because she though it would've gotten worse. The point in when I got hooked to this book is when Louie and his team were playing against Washington and their coach told the whole team to destroy Washington. He told them to do whatever it takes to take Washington out of the game. When Boomer finally tackled Washington and put him on a stretcher was when things started picking up and began to get interesting. I just finished my book which is staying fat for Sarah Byrnes, and the part that Chris Crutcher hooked me on was when a character, Jody, told the main character about a certain procedure she had under the pressure of her then boyfriend and Erics current enemy. Although it sounds weird to have that as the hooking scene, it was quite intriguing to see somebody open up so fast about something so personal. The author has a very good writing style and overall i loved the read although it was rather short.

  30. During the beginning of this book I definitely did not have a hook. I was very confused with what was going on. I did not understand how the stories connected or anything. The thing that changed that all for me and got me hooked would be reading about Dillon's brother and definitely reading about Jennifer. I was very intrigued to read about what Dillon and Preston did as children. Some of the stuff they did was brutal and kind of crazy, but I was mostly intrigued because their actions got me thinking about who they are as people. reading these events caused me to think about Dillon and Preston's state of mind. The events got me thinking and pondering about how Dillon took the traumatic event verses how Preston did and breaking apart the book during those events definitely got me hooked into Dillon's story. I got hooked to Jennifer's story because I had sympathy for her, reading about her abusive past made me feel bad for her and want to understand more about her life. Reading about Jennifer definitely broke my hear a little bit, it was hard to read her chapter during all of the abusive parts because it broke my heart to read that such a little girl would be going through these things. I will remember how awful people can be and I will remember the importance of being kind to others and comforting others when they need it because I know that everyone goes through struggles and it is important to talk about those struggles and get through them with someone by your side.

  31. I was hooked right away when T started reading the book Running Loose. I love sports and right when Crutcher started talking about football, he had me hook. I could relate to Louie very well at the beginning of the book when all he trained and practice for football for his senior year. That was literally my summer too, preparing for my senior year of football. Throughout the rest of the book, it was hard to put down. The plot would get intense and then come back down and then shoot right back up. While reading the book, I would always be wondering what is going to happen next. I didnt want to put the book down early in the book when Louie was racing Boomer and Becky's death. I will always remember the "guts" that Louie showed throughout this stoy.
