Blog Response #4
The endings of Chinese Handcuffs, Staying Fat for Sarah Byrnes, Running Loose, and Stotan! leave the reader with some unanswered questions. Chris Crutcher assumes the reader knows the ending, but he doesn't come out and say it. You take control and write the overview of one more chapter to these books. If there was one last chapter, what would it be about. How would you tie up loose ends, if you were the author?

In the book Chinese Handcuffs, Chris Crutcher tied up nearly all of the loose ends. I really do not think I would add another chapter if I had the chance. If I had to write another chapter, it would take place about five years into the future, in Dillon's point of view. He would tell about his experience making things work with Jennifer, and how he helped her through the trials to put T.B. away for life. It would also tell how his nephew has grown up so fast, and how Stacy moved in right next to them, so they could all help her raise the baby. Lastly he would tell about how he has climbed the ladder to become one of the best triathlon runners in the world. This would conclude any loose ends still left by going far into the future to explain how everything ended up.

DeleteIn the book Stotan the ending is Walker, Nortie and Lion going to state for swimming. They ended up doing really well but that was because they were doing it for Jeff because he couldn't be there. Now though since the meet is over with they don't have nothing else to do for Jeff. Walker is just trying to figure out why Jeff got the sickness because he was a good kid, but there is nothing they can do about it. Chris Crutcher ends the book at the part where Walker was getting ready to pick up Devnee to set her straight. I think if there was another chapter it would be Walker talking to Devnee about how he really feels and why he has been distance but things might change between them because Elaine doesn't have feeling for him and she told him that it wouldn't work between them. Walker would probably end up being alone. I wish there was more to the ending and it didn't end where it did.

Deletewell that kinda sucks how it ended but you can always imagine what happens next and its how you wont the book to end some times that is a beter way to end a book maybe that was the goal and thats why chris ended the book the way he did
DeleteThis is near the opposite of the end of my book. Where you were left with loose ends, my book was almost fully concluded. There was not a whole lot to add to the end of the book.
DeleteThat stinks that your book ended with a cliff hanger. I hate books that do that because then I want to know how it ends and I get hooked on the story line.
DeleteI really dont think the book needs another final chapter. But if i had to write another one i would write it about how he moves away and goes to college. It would be cool to see where he ends up and how his life ends up too. So if i had i would also write about him as a grow adult too.

DeleteI did not think i would add another chapter at the end of my book either, i felt like my book was complete as it was. I would've also added a chapter that took place a few years in the future if i had to add a chapter.

DeleteI think Chris Chrutcher finished up everything. There is no need for a another chapter. if they were to add another chapter it would be about dillion meeting his brother after dillion dies.

DeleteI agree that most of the books dont really need another chapter but maybe just something at the end to see how the charchters are in the future.

DeleteIn the book Running Loose, I dont really think that there needs to be a final chapter, i feel like the book ends on a good note. But if there was a final chapter i feel like it would be Louie finally moving out of the town and possibly going to college or settling down in another town and continuing on with his life, I could also see him being best friends with Carter and possibly Washington.
ReplyDeleteSAME. i feel like Louie and Washington will become great friends because Louie earned Washington's respect after beating him in the 2 mile race.

DeleteYes I agree with you, Chris Crutcher ended the book Running Loose pretty good and there is really not another chapter needed. But I like your idea that he finally moves out of Trout and starts a new life with his best friend and maybe Washington.

DeleteMy book did a very good job of tying up any loose ends, but somehow it still did partially miss what would eventually happen to her mother, or how long sarahs dad would go to jail for.
DeleteI totally agree with you on this. Running Loose has no loose ends to be tied up Chris Crutcher he did a pretty good summarizing the book.
DeleteI think the next chapter of running loose would go something where Louie breaks Becky's memorial again and jasper trys to get Louie in trouble for breaking it but can't catch Louie. Then i feel like the story will talk about Louie graduating. After graduation, i feel like Louie will move away to start the beginning of his life fresh somewhere else.

DeleteYea I agree with you that Chris Crutcher should have given some information on what happened after graduation. I also agree with you that Louie would probably move away and start somewhere fresh.
DeleteIn the book Chinese Handcuffs I would not put another chapter in it. In my opinion theres really no point in putting another one in. It sums up the whole book well and really dont leave you hanging. If anything Id write like a series book after it. Like Dillion in like 5 years and see whats changed and see if he turned his life around.

DeleteIf I could write one more chapter for the book running loose, it would probably be an overall summary about how Louie’s life has changed since the beginning of the story. I would write about how his character changed. He became a lot stronger, way more adult and independent. He learned how to handle bad things that have happened to him. Louie may not always took the right decisions, but in the end, everything worked out pretty well for him. I think the people around him had a very good influence on him too and they helped him through his bad times. His parents where always there for him like his best friend Carter. And before Becky died, she was a big part of his life too. I would not say Becky’s dead was a good thing, but in the end, it helped Louie to put all his anger in something more important than cutting down a tree or destroying Becky’s memorial. I think track was something for him, where he could just escape and forgets everything.

Deletei am reading the book stotan. i think that if there was another chapter it would be about jeff hawkins passing away. even tho it is not a needed chapter because it foreshawdows that he passes away at the end of the story. he wrote the book very well and it was a very good book and drug me into reading it.

DeleteI am reading running loose. I really dont think the book needs another chapter but if their was it would be the main character like 20 years latter talking about where he is now and talking about when he was in high school.
ReplyDeleteYeah, the ending basically told what he was going to do, but not much afterwards, implying that he is planning on smashing the plaque. There isn't much need for it but it can definitely put a perspective on what Louie is doing later in life.

ReplyDeleteIn the book Stotan I think if there was another chapter it would talk about Jeff’s death due to his disease. I think he would last another week or so but eventually the disease will take over. I think that the boys would take it hard but would stay together. There were a few loose ends such as Walker and Devnee and if they are till together. Another is has Nortie ran into Obrien again.

Deletein the book Chinese hand cuffs the ending was awesome it did not leave you with any questions but if i was going to write about one more chapter it would be 10 years from the end of the book and just see how Jenifer and the other charters moved on
ReplyDeleteIf i were to think of a last chapter for the book staying fat for sarh byrnes, i would place it a few years into the future, either after they graduate college, or when the characters start becoming parents. This ending would also include Jody and Eric being married, Sarah finding a love interest, and his mom and her boyfriend getting married. This would be a best case scenario, and probably would not be the story Chris would write.

DeleteI would also like to see him write the last chapter in the future just to see how all the characters have developed in the future, and i also agree that it just doesnt seem like the authors writing style.

ReplyDeleteI think that he left some things unanswered like Louie smashing Becky's plaque in the end for the second time. Like I get that he's angry but why do it again when he'll get in even more trouble?
DeleteIf I were to think of the last chapter for the book Running Loose, I would have it ending with Louie getting away with smashing Becky's plaque, once again and having him finally cope with Becky's death and find peace. He would go to college and find something he's passion about and still run track. Boomer is finally friends with Louie and all three of them including Carter are all friends.

DeleteI think if i had to add a chapter to the book Staying Fat for Sarah Byrnes it would take place in the future. I think maybe like 5 years down the the road to see how everyone in the book turns out. I would like to see how Sarah is dealing with her scars as an adult and how people are seeing her. I would also like to see if Eric and Sarah are still friends after school. I would also like to see how long Sarahs dad will be in jail for.

DeleteI agree that it would be interesting to see how people treat Sarah outside of high school . Sara really cared out the kids in the facility and the book hints her career might have to do something with that so i think that would be cool and interesting to see

DeleteI had the book Staying Fat for Sarah Byrnes. If I had to add another chapter it would be at the beginning of when Mobe started school so about 6 months later. And I would tie up whats going on in Sarahs life like if shes happy and how she is doing. Also, I would have something in there from Mr. Byrnes point of view. And how Mark is doing, and I would put in how Eric and Jody are doing.
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't say that the book Chinese Handcuffs needs another chapter. I think that Chris Crutcher did an outstanding job at ending the book with a little bit of peace. I am glad that he ended it well because of how intense the book was in the beginning. The book had so many different cliff hangers in-between chapters I don't think it would have been a good idea to have a cliff hanger at the end

ReplyDeleteI read Running Loose and the last chapter was kind of a longer chapter and it kind of ran on. Chris Crutcher in Running Loose did a really good job at summarizing the whole book in the last chapter, to wrap the whole book up. He never really left me with any lingering questions. Just wondering what Louie was going to do with the rest of his life. If I was the author I would end it like Chris Crutcher did and have the last chapter basically a full review of the whole book then wrap up the whole book with something that he was doing at the present moment.
ReplyDeleteIf I were to write a last chapter for staying fat for Sarah byrnes it would be when Eric, Sarah , Ellerby and Jody all go off to college . I would answer weather Eric and Jody continue to date , How Eric, Sara and Ellerby are keeping in touch and whats going on I their lives now that they're in college now . I would give an update on how Sarah's life with the lemerys is going what she decides to do with her life . I would also talk about The relationship of carver and Erics mom and how its going . I also think it would be interesting to see what marks doing now .
ReplyDeleteIf I were to write a chapter for Running Loose, it would probably be seeing the outcome of smashing the plaque for the tree again, maybe seeing if Jasper learns that the plaque isn't right and changes it to be the way it should probably be. All it gives us is another foreshadowed plaque smashing and I believe readers understood that.

DeleteAdding another chapter to Chinese Handcuffs would i think be Jennifer's stepdad coming back to ruin Dillon and Jennifer's life along with Jennifer's family and the stepdad trying to get the tapes from Dillon but Dillon would shoot him before he would be able to get the tapes. Then Dillon and Jennifer would run away to Canada or something.

ReplyDeleteThe ending of Running Loose was intense and I think Louie might have overreacted a little to much when he hit the plaque and even when he chopped the tree down.

DeleteIn the book Stotan, if there was one more chapter it would probably be an overview of the swim team winning a competition for Jeff but after the competition they find out that Jeff isn’t going to make it much longer because of this blood disease he has. With the passing of Jeff, Walker and the swim team will become closer than ever and they do Stotan week every year for him. That would be a good ending/ last chapter if I were the author.

DeleteIn the book Stotan, the other leaves the end of the book without saying how one of the charcters, Jeff, is doing at the end since he has cancer. If i were to add an ending it would say wether Jeff died or not and i would explain what happens to all the boys at the end, since the author never said.
