  1. I was interested to this book because I was interested to know more about the culture of the middle east. I don't think it started slow at all i never really had a point of the book that i was not interested. It definitely jumps right in talking about Mariam's life and how she was raised to think of herself. The names in this book are kind of confusing to say because they are names i am not familiar with. The only thing i would say is confusing is when she writes some of the things are written in Farsi their language they speak. Overall, i am enjoying this book and the culture i am learning is quite different than what i originally thought the middle eastern culture would be like.

    1. I had the exact same interest as you when it came to learning more about the Middle East. I feel like we have never really talked about it in school before. The names also confused me. They are unlike anything I have ever heard before, and are hard to keep straight.

    2. I agree with Rylee this books started off fast, with everything that Mariam has going on. I also agree with the language and the names being confusing at times.

    3. i am glad you enjoy your book how does the middle eastern culture depicted in the book differ than what you expected ?

  2. What got my attention with A Thousand Splendid Suns was it seems the most interesting to me because Mariam is so young and is going through so much. After reading the first few pages I really like this book, so many things have happened to Mariam and its constantly making me guess what is going to happen. The parts that confused me the most is when the book says some words in Farsi. My questions are whats actually going on with the dad, and how is her husband really going to treat her?

    1. I also had the same questions. Are you happy with your book choice, or do you wish to have gotten a different one? When do you think things will start to pick up in the story?

  3. I was attracted to the book because in all of school, I can not remember the last time I have read/learned anything about Afghanistan. I thought it would be cool to read something about this area for the first time. I'm not sure what I was expecting, but as of now, the book has given me a bad first impression of Afghani people. It started slow, but it was good because I got a good feel for the back story. No part was particularly confusing for me, other than getting the characters straight, but I am a little uncomfortable reading the book as a boy just got raped in an alley. My biggest question - as of now - is when shit is going to hit the fan. I see it coming as the Sunnis treat the Shi'as worse as the days go on, but I am not sure when exactly everything will go south. I also wonder what Amir (the main character) will do when everything does go south.

    1. I dont like how they talk about their daily life in culture either. They have been living that way for hundreds of years, and now they sound like radicals compared t how everyone else lives. It was also a pretty predictable scenario for somebody to try to quiet her in a society like theirs. I agree that it just doesn't cast a god light on their society.

    2. What has happened in the book to give you a bad first impression toward Afghanistan people? and I feel the same way about learning of new places. That's why I am enjoying the book I am reading because I am learning a lot about the culture of places in the middle east and in that general area. It is a huge culture shock to read these stories of people and know of their lives and how these acts are normal to them!!

    3. Its so amazing how different our culture is compared to theirs. Like its the complete opposite.

  4. i am reading night and the book is kind of easy going at first then it just jumps right into it with from just living at there hows then getting woken up and had to get on a train and there was this women that was freaking out because of there family's separation and they had a limited amount of food and water they then they when to the first camp and they were treated poorly and feed poorly they whent to the next camp and that is when they were put in a shower and got new clothes and got a tattoo the next day at first they were feed thick soup at lunch black coffee in the morning and bread at night

    1. Night sounds like the polar opposite of Kite Runner in the beginning. Where your author jumped straight in, mine took time to explain a lot of back story. Also the family you are reading about does not sound well off in the slightest. The main family in my book is extremely well off, with their house being described as one of the nicest in all of Afghanistan.

      Delete
    2. I am also reading the book Night and i would agree that the book does start off kind of slow and then jumps right into it. I do like the book so far because of how detailed it is being when they are at the concentration camps.

  5. Well i am reading the book Kite Runner and the main characters amir and hassan and it started as a flash back to when amair was 12 and his best friend and servant is hassan they pay together and the hassan gets raped by the bully named assef in the ally and amir seen it happen but ran away and did nothing. the book is kinda weird but it is a good book I guess. My only question is why did he right this book.

  6. This book jumped in right away with all kinds of interesting stuff. the narrator starts off talking about his family and the war that has been going on. the rebels are taking over peoples villages and killing them if they do not listen to orders. there was a lot of gun shots and a lot of the villagers tried to run away.

  7. This wasnt my first choice but it was my second choice. I am happy i got because i like reading about the holocaust and World War 2. I like the book so far. I do like how they are being detailed in writing their emotions and what they are all going through. I had a pretty good start to it, and it was actually pretty faced paced start. My only question so far is how long they have to stay in concentration camps all together. First impressions are pretty good so far.

    4. I didn't get to choose, but like you i'm happy with what i was given. My book started out as rather slow pace compared t yours, and i feel it will stay that way the rest of the book since its an autobiography.

  8. I got the book “The Kite Runner” by Khaled Hosseini. It was not my first choice and I rather want to read the book “Night” by Elie Wiesel. Right now, I’m not a big fan of my book and to be honest this book scares me, because it’s really long. It is also harder to read for someone whose first language isn't English compared to our last book. The beginning of my book is also confusing, because the author introduced so many new characters and jumps from the present right back into the past. It’s a little bit annoying to stop reading and to look up all the words I don’t know, but that’s more of a personal problem. It’s definitely more challenging for me, but I hope I can improve my English.

  9. In the book a long way gone a group of boys are going to get water and listening to rap music. They then get attacked by the rebels and are forced to leave their families. I think the book jumps right in to the story, but I think it is a very disturbing book because of all the imagery. At first, I was a little confused on whether he was having a flashback, or it was going on at that point. The only question I have is how much worse can this story get?

    1. The book a long way gone sounds like it jumps right into it, unlike the kite runner where it takes a while before some big events start to happen.

    2. Yeah I could see if it was bad imagery that it would make the book disturbing but it also might make the book more understanding.

    3. I am reading I am malala and can relate to thinking how much worse can it get for the character , because it hard to imagine having to fight just to go to school then being shot for it and also all of the other problems women face in the middle east

  13. The book I am reading is A Long way Gone. I wanted this book because i wanted to know what it was like during the war over there. So far there have been no slow parts and the book jumps right into the action. I am glade that it jumped right in because I would've gotten annoyed and probably put the book down. There are a lot of very detailed and graphic parts in the book and i think that is why i like it because you can tell that the person who wrote it knows what there talking about. So far the main Character has been separated from his family, almost killed by rebels at least five times, and he has seen countless of dead bodies. Whenever he sees a body he describes how it looks like if there are limbs cut of or how there facial expression looks. I still don't get why he left his friend. After a town gets raided him and 5 of his friends including his older brother get separated. He finds one of his friends and they stay together and find a family but, after two weeks he leaves his friend so he's all alone.

  14. I'm reading the book A Thousand Splendid Suns and what attracted me to want to read this book is how it takes place in like the 1970s. I like reading books that are about being back in the day and there not about war. what I have read its nothing about war. When I read the first couple of pages my reaction was that the names in the book are a little different and I was kind of loss in the first couple pages, so I guess you could say I kind of had slow start but then I figured out what was going on, and now it's really hard to put the book down but I don't want to get a head of my group. I'm so glad I got this book because even though some weird things happen that's what makes the book interesting.

  15. My mom once read The Kite Runner book a couple years ago and said that I should read it if I ever got the chance. It had a good lesson in it and I have seen people walking around with the book and though I should give it a read if I ever got the chance, so I did. My first thoughts about the book were it was pretty slow. But once they got in that fight it started to get more interesting. I don't really have any questions at this point in the book I am sure I will Later.

  17. I'm reading the book Night, and the book pulled me right in, because the Holocaust is very interesting. Also hearing it from a person that was actually there, shows how it was a terrifying experience for each individual person that went to the camps. 19. I'm reading A Thousand Splendid Suns and the book bores me slightly. The reason it bores me a bit is only because i don't understand a lot of the words and i'm constantly having to look them up which is quite annoying. When I first started reading the book I thought the beginning was very slow and was describing her home life and it seemed to drag on a lot. 23. A Long Way Gone was not my first pick, but it certainly was a good one. I was sick most of the week that everyone got their book so I am only about 20 pages in, the amount of detail that the author puts into the book is amazing and its just the kind of book I enjoy reading. It really sets how the rest of the book is going to be. It takes a few pages to get there, but when it hits, it hits hard. The only confusing part is going to be the names because its from a different country, but I'll probably get the hang of it.

I think that the book pulled me right in as its setting of a small village in the middle east during a war is a very interesting setting. It pulls you in whenever something happens to the village that the boys are in, like the rebels constantly attacking every village they can find and kill any innocent people they can. 30. Im reading the book I Am Malala, which so far is okay, but not incredibly interesting since autobiography dont often catch my eye. This book though may be an exception, and seems as though it is building to a climax, but that seems somewhat unrealistic as what must be the climax must be when she was shot in the head, which she talks about three pages in. So far i do partially enjoy, and i'm very impressed by how well a young women from a third world country can write in English.

I thought my book started at a steady pace. I thought is was really interesting how over in Afghanistan they do kite race torments or competitions. I think that is really cool part of their culture or traditions that they do.I was very shocked with Amir didn't help Hassan when he got jumped by Assef and his gang. It kind of made me sad because a true friends always have each others backs and clearly Amir is a true friend to Hassan because he didn't help him. I know for a fact that is AMir was the one getting jumped, Hassan would be the first one there to help Amir, because Hassan is a loyal friend and a loyal servant to Amir's family.
