Blog Response #6

In all five novels, the main character or characters face adversity in one way or another.  Describe how you view the character's challenges in your book, and talk about how your character handles the hardships and struggles.  If you were in your main character/characters situation, how would you handle yourself?  What would you do?

  1. So i am reading Night. The main character is a jewish boy living in the time of Nazi Germany. So he is being hunted down and hes watched people he knows die. He has watched them throw babies up and shoot them or throw them into a fire. He has had to deal with being severely under fed and malnourished. He has had to deal with working all day and getting no reward for his hard work. He has also had to deal with his faith and how hes been questioning it a lot more. Honestly if i was in this position i dont know what id do.

    1. I don't know how he could watch them do that. I would have to go some where else so I wouldn't see it happen or I would try to stop what they were about to do.

    2. This book sounds very interesting.Do you think hes gonna stand up and try to fight back or just stay low?

    3. Having faith has been one of the biggest conflicts for Elie so far, because he says that they are now, not scared of death and that it is better than the conditions there living in now.

    4. i agree when the only thing you have is faith and you give that up you have nothing to live for what keep you moving forward

    5. I also agree it must be very hard for them to have doubts about their God and Religion espicially because the reason they are in the concentration camps to begin with is because of there religion.

    6. To say we could even understand what would it would be like to be in a position like that is impossible, but for us pampered american id say most of us would curl into a ball and suffer a total loss of sanity.

    7. Its very scary to think that something has happened like that within the last hundred years, but we as a people right now can do nothing about it. People suffered so terribly in those times, and now we could not fathom suffering as they felt. I bet i can understand why they're questioning their faith, i would be too.

  5. The main character of The Kite Runner is from a rich family and does not face much real adversity of his own. All of the adversity happens with his life-long friend and servant Hassan. Hassan is of a different religion than Amir (the main character), and gets abused and bullied because of it. The only real adversity that Amir encounters is whether he should help his servant and consider him his friend or just leave Hassan to deal with everything himself. Later in the book, he also has to try to get his father to assimilate to American culture after they move from Afghanistan. If I was in Amir's shoes, I would stand up for Hassan, because he would do anything for me, so I would do the same to him. As for trying to get my father to assimilate, I have no idea what I would do. Trying to get someone who has authority over you to do something is very hard, seemingly impossible.

    1. You are right about about how it is almost in impossible for Amir to assimilate his dad to American culture. Another reason it would be hard is all that Baba knows is his culture from Afghanistan. Baba is a stubborn man to began with.

    2. At first I thought that Amir had the most adversity in The Kite Runner but after reading your entry I would agree that Hassan. Is the person that has the most, Amir's adversity is just because of the things that happened to Hassan.

  6. I am reading the book A Long Way Gone and the main charter is named Ishmael his is from Sierra Leone. HE faces many challenges such as being attacked by rebels, his friend saidu died, he hasnt ate in a while, he has been caught twice and he doesnt know if his family is dead or alive. He handles all of this in a very good manner by keeping calm and just doing what he can to stay alive. if i was in his shoes i would not be able to handle it near as well as he is doing. i would be freaking out and just probably wait and hide.

    1. I am reading The Kite Runner which also takes place in the Middle east. When things start to go crazy Amir is extremely well off so he does not go on the run for very long. Some people leave or die, and it hurts him a lot, but nothing really destroys him, and he still stays the same person. If I was in his shoes, I would act similarly to how they do in the book.

  7. I am reading A Thousand Splendid Suns and in this book Mariam and Laila face many challenges. For instance Mariam had to deal with her mothers emotional abuse, her mothers suicide, getting married at 15 to an abusive husband, and her fathers abandonment. Even though this is a lot of stuff Mariam handles it amazingly well, she does this by keeping her hand down and she does what she is supposed too. If I was her i wouldnt take any of it i probably would of ran away and i definitely would not of married that 40 year old man. Laila faces many challenges too like, having to be the parent because her mom is very depressed, dealing with her friends murder, and missing Tariq. She deals with this by accepting the fact that she cant change anything especially when shes only 6 years old. If I was her I would not be the parent i would make my mom get out of bed and force her to do something.

  8. In my book i have 2 main characters. The first character is Marium, she has gone through so many challenges and struggles. First thing Marium's mom died when she was very young, after her mothers passing her dad (who does love her but his 3 wives hate her because she is a "bastard child" and dont want Marium to stay) ships her off to get married to a man who is 30 years older than her (Marium 15, Rasheed 45 ish) Marium does not want to go with Rasheed but does because she knows that is her only option. Marium tries her hardest to make the best of her situations. The other main character in this book is Laila (Rasheed's Neighbors daughter) Laila has grown up basically with just her father. Her mother is not really a mother to her because her mom is depressed and doesnt ever do anything. Laila is in love with Tariq (her neighbor) and Tariq and his family just left the country because of the war. And laila does her best to deal with her struggles by being there for her mother and trying to help her in any way possible.

  9. I am reading I Am Malala and The main character Malala has gone through a lot of adversity . Malala was targeted and shot by the Taliban on her school bus on her way to school because she advocated for girls getting an education . I cant imagine being shot for wanting to get an education . Its hard to say how you think you would react to something like that but I hope if I were in that situation I would handle it like malala . After her recovery Malala Continued to get her education in England were she now lives and continues to speak out about the importance of girls getting an education despite almost losing her life . I think how Malala handled what she went through makes her a great role model of perseverance for anyone especially young women and girls .

  10. I am reading the book A Long Way Gone. So far the main character has had to run all over to different villages to stay away from rebels. At the start of the book he would talk about people that had been attacked by rebels coming to his town. Some wold stay but most would keep walking because they knew that someday the rebels wold attack there town. Barley any of them would talk and a lot of them where wounded. Now that his town has been attacked and hes seen so many people die including one of his friends he is doing the same thing. At one point in the book he got separated from his brother and all of his friends except for one. Him and his friend found a family and they were safe but for some reason he decided to leave so it was just him walking in the forest. If I was in that situation I would have stayed with the family and my friend.

  11. I am reading The Kite Runner, and someone that has too go through adversity pretty much his whole life was Amir. Obviously a very big obstacle in his life was watching his best friend get raped, and do absolutely nothing about it. That is something very big to live with the rest of your life. Also never telling anyone one about it ever would be another very heavy burden. I don't know if I could live with myself if I saw my best friend get raped I honestly have no idea how I would react. I don't think I could keep that in my entire life and never tell anyone.

  12. In the book A Thousand Splendid Suns one of the main characters Mariam has a pretty rough life. She had her mom telling her one thing and her dad telling her a different thing. Mariam's mother was a mean lady to others, so Mariam had more respect towards her dad. Which was way she went to go live with her dad and when she went back to her mom's house, she found her mom hanging from a tree. Then after this happen, she was forced to marry a forty-year-old man even though she is only fifteen. When Mariam couldn't give her husband what he wanted he became abusive towards her. Mariam handles these situations very calmly she just lets it happen and then she gets over it. If I was Mariam and the time frame was now, I would have left and never came back. I wouldn't put up with that crap because that's not right. No one should be in an abusive relationship or be force into doing something you don't want to do.

  13. I'm reading A Thousand Splendid Suns and the character Mariam has to deal with a lot growing up. Her mom always called her a bastard and was very rude to her. Her mother also hung herself and Mariam had to see it. She got an arranged marriage and had to marry and 40-45 year old man named Rasheed who is a lousy, pathetic husband. He made her eat rocks to show her how her rice tasted and she broke her teeth. If i were Mariam i would probably feel as lost in her. She has no choice in her situation. 15. I'm reading the book kite Runner and the main character Amir faces adversity when he best friend Hassan gets raped while Amir watches from aground the corner. I think Amir doesn't handle the situation very well. If Amir was a true friend to Hassan, he would have stepped in and hopefully helped Hassan. AFter the rapping, Amir shut Hassan out of his life. I don't agree with how Amir is handled things. He didn't tell anyone! Amir didn't ever confront Hassan about what happened even though both of them knew what happened. Hassan Knew that Amir knew about the rapping. Instead of Amir being a good friend, things got way worst between them. If I was Amir, I would have at least stepped in to try to save Hassan and I would for sure NOT shut Hassan out of my life because he sacrificed so much for Amir for just a kite and even more. Hassan is the loyal and true friend.

Afgahnistan he had it made his dad was very wealthy and he had no worries besides Hassan. The only adversity he faced when he was home was what food he was gonna eat. 20. I am reading the book A Thousand Splendid Suns and in the book, Maraim, the main character, takes on many problems. She has to deal with the mental/emotional abuse from her mother always putting her down, loosing her mother due to suicide, getting forced to marry a 40 year old abusive man, and having several miscarriages. She handles all these problems very well. Even though all this stuff is happening to Mariam, she still keeps trying and trying to make her husband happy. 22. I am reading the book A Thousand Splendid Suns, in this book the main character, Mariam, is going through a lot of challenges. Her challenges began when her mom killed herself because she told Mariam not to go to town but she did anyways and that made her mother kill herself. After that she only had her father left, but then he made her marry a man much older than her, she did not approve and she did not want. She is continuing to go through a lot, such as the loss of babies, her mother, and her father sending her off so he never has to see her again. Even with all of this bad stuff going on with Mariam, she is willing to push through it all, love herself and others. She loves her husband no matter what and she doesn’t let anyone see the pain that she is going through. If I were in this characters situation I wouldn’t be able to handle it all as good as she does but I know I would be able to try my best and I would honestly use the chores and go outside more as my coping device.

  23. Ishmael seems to take a lot of risks to basically do anything for food. Looting villages, climbing trees he doesn't know how to climb, and eating potentially poisonous fruit. It doesn't help that people won't help him out because they're scared that he could be a child soldier. His country seems to be in Survival of the Fittest mode, where people try to do anything and everything for themselves, which is completely understandable in a time of Civil War. I would probably not do too well in the survival aspect or I would be really unlucky and be the first one shot.

  24. In my opinion the main character in the book “The Kite Runner” written by Khaled Hosseini is Amir. Amir is an intelligent young son of a successful businessman in Kabul. His best friend is Hassan. I would say their relationship is very complicated, because Amir changes his attitude from acting like a loyal friend back to attacking Hassan. Amir is a very ambitious kid, who needs and also wants all the attention from his father. He wants to make him proud. But his father doesn't always give it to him, but to Hassan. Therefore it’s predictable that they start a fight sooner or later.

The Taliban are controlling everything and are punishing many people if they break their rules. Another challenge she faces is the fact that girls aren't suppose to go to school and not only does she go to school but she enjoys it and talks about how she wants to be free all of the time. The way that Malala handles it is by speaking up and doing interviews talking about what's happening in her country. If I was in her position I would probably handle it similar to how she is.
