Imagery is key to capturing the reader's imagination and taking him/her on the adventure within the book. All 4 authors use several different techniques to paint a picture in your mind of the scenes within the plot of the book. Share two or three images that have been captured in your mind through the author's word choice. Why are these images so vivid, and how did the author manage to accomplish this task? Be sure to include
specific details of what you envisioned through the author's words.
Some scenes that I can imagine in my head from the book “The Kite Runner” are when Hassan and Amir won the Kite runner tournament and Hassan is about to get the blue kite back for Amir. When Hassan is in the alley the kid from the other team showed up with his friends. In my head the scene is played in a dark street in the evening. Hassan is scared but he doesn’t want to show it because he knows that this would make him seem weak. However, the kids from the other team start fighting Hassan until he lays on the ground and can’t move anymore.
ReplyDeleteAnother scene that I really like is one of the last ones in the book, where Amir and the son of Hassan are outside, in the park and they see a kite. Hassan bought a kite and shows Sohrab how to use it. All of sudden Sohrab starts smiling for the first time and Amir is also really excited. When the Kite is back down on the floor again Amir is about to get it back for Sohrab and tells him “for you, a thousand times over”. This is what Hassan used to say all the time to Amir when they were younger.
You took the opposite approach to this prompt than I did. You seem to remember the happy scenes in great detail, and the gory scenes in less detail. The gory scenes stood out much more for me because they scared me. I cannot seem to forget the horrible parts of the book, and those horrible parts drown out many of the details from the more uplifting portions of the book.
Deletethe image that is really stuck in my head is the big chimnies and the smoke.the pile of dead bodys and guys throwing the kids in the air for target practice the train carts full of starving cold and sick people being hauled of to the next camp thes images are stuck in my head because of the fact that it shouldnt ever happen to anyone ever and that it was actually happening

DeleteThe reason that the my images would not leave my head was the same as yours. They were so horrible that I could not believe that things like that were actually happening. They were just so bad that I saw them even more vividly, and they became impossible to forget.
DeleteIt looks like your book is a very graphic and brutal, war books are hard for me to read because of all of the vivid details during the war
DeleteThat sounds awful and i cant believe stuff like that actually happened
DeleteThat would be horrible to see kids being used for target practice. Much worst probably happen in this book.
DeleteWhat book are you reading? Is it night? that sounds so horrible
DeleteI also agree for me i also think the part that really sticks with me from the book is when they are in the cattle cars.
DeleteSounds like a very scary book, full or terrifying imagery. Would you recommend it to others or recommend it to be put in an R-Rated section?
Deletebook done

ReplyDeleteThere were two main images that stayed in my mind even after finishing the book. They were both very graphic, and that is a big part of what made them hard to forget. They both happened within a few chapters of each other if not in the same chapter. The first one was that of Amir's bloody hands. When the author described the glass-coated kite string slicing through the skin of his hands, I can see the gashes forming in his hands. The faint red marks turning darker by the second until blood comes to the surface, and runs off his hands dripping dark red into the snow near his feet. The other image I could not get out of my head is the aftermath of a guy getting raped. The author describes how his pants are stained brown, and they are dripping dark blood into the snow. It is a horrible image, and that is why it is stuck in my head. The worst thing I imagined about the whole situation was how he felt about himself, having such a horrible thing done onto him. Also the twisted way the author said he hobbled away.
ReplyDeleteI am also reading kite runner and i also did these 2 scenes.
DeleteThe part where Hassan is raped, is probably the part that most people will the remember the most about Kite Runner because i feel like it sets the tone/ mood for the rest of the story.
DeleteI agree with you that the raping image was stuck in my head the author described it with very vivid imagery. That was very easy to have the image in your head, It was pretty messed up.
Deletewhen the book first started they we talking abou soldiers coming in and killing all the villagers. the way the author described it i cant get it out of my head.like all the dead bodies laying there with the soldiers walking around checking that everyone is dead and stuff. also another image i cant get out of my head is ishmaels friend gasemu getting shot in the back as they were running away from the village.
ReplyDeletethese visuals must have been very violent and very visual especially in a war book
DeleteWhat book are you reading? In the book the kite runner the Taliban shoot random people on the street who just looked at them and that is a scene that is stuck i my head too.
DeleteI can see how massacring a village could leave a vivid image left in your head. Just thinking about it with you describing it left the image in my head i couldn't imagine it with more detail.
DeleteIn my book A Thousand Splendid Suns I can vividly visualize Laila's and Tarique's walks and their talks and basically their whole relationship because their relationship had such detail and was very specifically described. I could also picture Rasheed and Marium's Wedding very vividly because all of the emotion was there and you could visualize how heartbroken Marium was and how ignorant her father Jalil looked during the ceremony and especially the cockyness of Rasheed just filled the room and you could just visualize all of these characters fighting to hold back their true emotions of the scene. The author was able to portray all of these things by not only painting a picture with description and detail but describing the tension that was in the room so that when the reader is visualizing they can feel the tension as if they were standing in the room during the ceremony.
ReplyDeleteI agree with everything rylee said, the wedding ceremony really stuck with me because of all the details, and I can imagine Mariams face, how disappointing she was with her father and his three wives forcing jalils hand in the matter.
DeleteTwo things that stuck with me is when one of Ishmael's friends died and at the start of the book when people where running into town and some of them where carrying dead bodies or people that were hurt.
ReplyDeleteWhen Ishmael's friend died they were being attacked by rebels and his friend was running when an RPG hit next to him and flew him in the air and he landed on a tree stump. Ishmael ran over to him and tried to help him but he slowly died.
When people where running into town one lady had he baby on top of her shoulders and Ishmael knew something was wrong with the baby. When she put him down Ishmael saw a bullet sticking out of the front of the babies stomach.
I am reading A Thousand Splendid Subs some images that I can picture is Mariams old Kabul which is a really tiny shack in the middle of no where. The author goes into extreme detail explaining every inch of this shack along with all the nature outside. Another scene that stuck with me is when Mariams husband made her eat the peddles because that's what he said her rice tasted like. The reason this stuck with me was because it brought out how mean the men were to the women for absolutely no reason. Also, how the author described every pain staking bite she was forced to make really stuck with me. And how she broke two molars as she bit into them.
ReplyDeleteyour book sounds pretty good and im glade you are interested in it and paying attention.
DeleteThe amount of imagery that the authors have put into the books that we are reading now is insane, you almost have to step into their shoes to see for yourself to see what they had to go through the amount of stuff they had to witness.
DeleteWhile reading the book The Kite Runner, One imagine that is stuck pretty clearly in my brain is when Sohab, was taking a bath while Amir was on the phone talking too his wife. Then pushed open the door too see his too be son laying in the tub with the water over flowing and blood turning the water red. With his wrist openly bleeding and Amir just screaming for help at the top of his lungs. The author made it easy too invision. Another image that was easy to see in my mind was when Assef was beating Amir with his brass knuckles and was describing in detail how and what was happening too his ribs getting broken and snapping like twigs when Assef was kicking them too getting punched in the mouth and swallowing his teeth.
ReplyDeleteIt really sets the mood on how the book is going to be after it gives you too much detail for some people to handle.
DeleteI agree with the first part of yours with Sohab. That leaves a striking image in my brain too.
Deletei am not reading this book but they way you describe this part is very vivid. the book kite runner sounds very interesting because of the imagery. do you think the book would be the same with less imagery?
DeleteMalala uses imagery to describe her surroundings and events shes talking about . Malala often talks about her Home Swat and how beautiful it is . She talks about the green grass , the mountains and the waterfall. So the parts where she talks about that are have a lot of imagery . like when her family is driving to Her cousins for the eid holiday she talks about how beautiful everything has and how gross the once beautiful river is because people are pouring their garbage in it , or the emerald mines and Buddha statues . Other scenes that are very visual are the more intense ones where shes talking about some kind of conflict that has happened like the Taliban attacking this girl for not wearing her burka and putting her face in water . Malala is very good at writing in detail which makes it easy to visualize whats going on and the surrounding area .
ReplyDeleteDoes the imagery help you understand what the characters are going through?
Deletethis book has really good imagery the imagery in the book helps you understand whats going on
DeleteThe first setting that really got set into our minds where they where packed on to cattle cars, they described them being packed in wall to wall with people in the extreme heat, they talk about people getting trampled and people being left behind.
ReplyDeleteThe second bad setting was the camps they went to, they went into deep detail of how they were treated or what happened at these times. Especially when they talked about the gallows being build and a child being hung but not weighing enough to snap his neck. Or the giant steel gates and the tall barb wire fences.
I also remember the cattle cars and how people on them were going crazy.
DeleteYou really cant make any of this up unless you experience it for yourself. I think thats what makes these books stand out.
DeleteI also agree with Micah because i feel like the way he tells the story you can really tell he lived through it.
DeleteIn the book A Thousand Splendid Suns the author uses a lot of imagery. One that stuck in my mind was when the author describes the character Rasheed rolling rice in a ball and then throwing it at Mariam. Then he stormed outside came back inside with pebbles and he made Mariam put the pebbles in her mouth and bit down on them which crack her back teeth. I was so mad Rasheed was so cruel to her. Another imagery in this book is When Tariq tells Laila that he is leaving the area she said that she feels like she is made of cement and that she sees her life as a rotten rope. Laila feels that way because she can't go with him because she doesn't want to leave her family behind. I really like this book and the imagery in it.
ReplyDeleteAre you happy with all the imagery? Do you think the book is good now or do you feel it needs more?
DeleteI agree with everything chloe said, when Rasheed threw the rice balls at Mariam you can actually picture how childish he really is and it shows through out the rest of the book.
DeleteHow do you think the strong imagery impacted you while reading this book?
DeleteThe Imagery in the book I Am Malala is really good. they explain how the valley swat was a really peaceful place they show how beautiful the valley is. when she got shot you could almost act like you were on the bus.
ReplyDeleteHow did those scenes in the book get captured in your mind?
DeleteI could see the valley imagery being one that sticks in your mind.
DeleteI am reading the book kite runner the best scene is when amir and hassan are going to win the blue kite back and then hassan gets raped it the ally and amir does nothing about it
ReplyDeletesounds instering
DeleteI am also reading this book and thought hassan getting raped was very grapic
DeleteWhen Elie explains how the guards were throwing babies in the fire is one of the pictures I will still remember after reading the book. Also it has probably scared Elie for life after seeing all that death.
ReplyDeletei agrree with that; that part was nasty.
Deletethe imagery in the book sounds really scary
DeleteA Long Way Gone's imagery is very vivid in detail. It lets you know that the author had to have experienced it firsthand to be able to describe each and every detail. Describing who has been shot, where they've been shot, and how they look when a person has died or how they died. The pastor being burned alive really sticks with you after you read what happened. You can't really make some of this stuff up unless you know how it looks for yourself.
ReplyDeleteI agree Micah the amount of detail he uses to describe what he witnessed is so life like that you can tell he isnt making it up. Between the pastor being burned to his little friend he had dying on the tree stump he puts a lot of detail in everything.
Deletei agree the imagery is very vivid and it just all sticks with you throughout the book. so many different visualizations you can get with the authors words.
DeleteI am reading the book Night. Im doing the seen where they are running and the guy falls down and then Elie dont see him agian. Am another seen is when he sees lids getting through into the fire
ReplyDeleteI thought it was sad when that person couldn't run anymore was gone and never seen again by Elie.
Deletethat part of the book was pretty emoshenal
DeleteI aa reading kite runner. There were 2 scenes in it that really stuck, One was when Hassan got raped in the alley and the other when Amir is flying the kite and it was cutting his hands. These were both very memorable because they were awfully graphic.
ReplyDeleteWhy was the kite cutting his hands and what was the outcome of it?
DeleteThe book you read sounds very disturbing. Was there nay other imagery or were those two meant to be very visually and mentally sustainable.
DeleteIn the book A Long Way Gone there is a lot of imagery. The 1st imagery that stuck out to me would have to be how in detail Ishmael would get about how people had looked while running from the rebels, the bullet hole wounds that they had the sound of the children screaming and crying. And how viciously the rebels had killed some civilians by shooting them at close range or by chopping off parts of their bodies or burning them alive. Personally I dont think that i would be able to handle what he had to see happening to the people in his country.
ReplyDeletethis is one part of the book that has very vivid imagery and it is stuck in my head. it sounds terrifying to have to see all of that and how you could see the blood trails from the attack.
Deletei am reading this book too. the imagery of peoples wounds stuck with me a lot.
DeleteI am reading I Am Malala and one image that has been captured in my mind was the whole part of her getting shot by a Taliban. Her family couldn't come down to see her but her dad, that's all the talked about for a few chapters as the end of the book sh says "a girl shot by a Taliban."
ReplyDeleteShe also says "I Am Malala. My world had changed but I have not." She says that because yes she got shot but that's now going to changed on who she is and what she wants to do with her life. It sounds like shes strong and excited to see what happens the rest of her life.
Why was her dad the only one that could come to see her? Was her family too scared to see how injured she was?
DeleteI agree, that was definitely a part of the book where the image was really vivid and going into detail with everything. There were so many feelings being shown and I think the author did a good job showing that.

ReplyDeleteI am reading A Thousand Splendid Suns and the scenes that really stuck were the ones where Mariam's mom killed herself because of how she found her. If i were ever in a situation like that i don't know what i would do. Another scene that really stuck with me was when Mariam had to eat rocks from Rasheed. she had to chew so hard that her teeth broke and fell out. She is horribly mistreated and i couldnt imagine living that way
ReplyDeleteI feel the same way, just reading some parts of this book sends chills down my spine, I couldn't imagine having to physically do it.
DeleteI agree with both of you. The words that the author uses describes every scene very well especially the ones when someone is getting hurt.
DeleteI am reading the book A Thousand Splendid Suns, one of the pictures that have been painted in my mind is the image of Mariam and Nana’s house, in the middle of nowhere with the big tree and chair beneath it the small but still big enough for 2 people, and manageable house. This image is so vivid to me because of the all the value it has to Mariam and the memories, well spent moments or nights with Nana. That house was Mariam’s whole childhood. Another image that is painted in my mind is the new town and house that Mariam lives in. It is quite different but she still took a little bit to adapt to it because of her basically never leaving the house. This house is bigger than her old one, but this one has many more things she can clean and also more things for her to cook with.
ReplyDeleteIn the book A Thousand Splendid Suns, some of the scenes go into a lot of detail. One of the scenes that i can picture is when Mariam's husband made her eat the pebbles and how her teeth broke into pieces in her mouth. Another of the scenes that I can picture is when Jalil's wives told Mariam that she was getting married and had no choice. I could picture the look she had o her face and that she was giving Jalil.
ReplyDeleteHow did the pebbles scene get your attention? it seems like a popular scene.
DeleteWhy did Mariam's husband make her eat pebbles? But I can imagine that that scene was very vivid having the author talk about the details of her teeth, cracking and breaking into pieces.
DeleteHow did her husband react while he made her do this?
DeleteOne image that sticks with me while reading the book "Kite Runner" is the part in the story where Amir and Hassan won the kite tournament and Hassan ran to get their blue kite. The part that sticks with the most is when Assef and his gang got Hassan and raped him while Amir watched from the distance. I could just picture Amir peaking around the corner to see Hassan being raped. Not a pleasant image.
ReplyDeleteAnother image that stivks with me is the part when Baba is really sick. Amir is holding Baba in his arms shouting for help. Amir also is saying stuff to Baba like I'm here and everything is gonna be okay. I could picture that nightmare of that possible being my father. I hope and pray that I would never have to experience my father's like the way Amir had to. I hope that no one would have to experience a death that way.
i am reading a long way gone and i think the imagery is very vivid and the imagery i see when the author talks about the forest they are running in, the bullets flying through the air, and peoples wounds from the bullets. it is all very easy to see and visualize it. the author does a really good job of making me see what is happening in the book.
ReplyDeleteI am reading the book night and it has some very good imagery and descriptive writing. For me the main part in the books that have the best imagery are when they are in the cattle cars and when Ellie is describing the chimneys. The way he describes how they were starving and dying of thirst on the cattle cars and how people were starting to go crazy. Also the way he describes the smell and smoke of the chimneys is something you cant make up and you know that he really lived through it and remembered it so vividly.
ReplyDeleteThis sounds like a good book and migth have to check it out. Sound slike something i would like.
DeleteAn image that really sticks out to me in the book I Am Malala is when they talk about her grandfather being an amazing speaker and how he has this great voice that's loud and powerful. The author made this image very vivid by how Malala talks about how her grandfather was famous for his speeches, how his speeches would speak to people and move them. Another image that stuck out to me is how rough and terrifying the Taliban was. The reason why this is vivid to me is because they talk about it over and over again saying all of the terrible things their doing. They blew up schools, were killing people for not doing exactly what they want, just all of these crazy things really stuck out and grabbed by attention.
ReplyDeleteWhat were his speeches about?
DeleteThe image that stuck out to me in Kite Runner was when Haasan and Amir won the kite tournament, and Haasan ran to go get the kite for Amir. When he got to the kite Assef and his two other friends wanted the kit but Haasan told him no it is for Amir. As a punisment Assef raped Haasan all because he wouldn't give a kite to him. Amir watched the whole thing happen but did not say anything. It shows how Haasan would do anything for Amir but Haasan would not do the same.
ReplyDeleteOne point of imagery i can clearly see in I Am Malala is when they crest a mountaintop in a village away from their home while riding a bus. She describes how beautiful and lush the surrounding jungle, and the beautiful sky. The people in this area are very happy, but also very poor and live in mud houses.
ReplyDeleteI pictured that same thing becasue there climate is very differnt from us and their culture is completely differnnt from us.
DeleteThe main picture I see is that is bus in a dsert that a random truck pulls up and guys come out with guns and shoot Mala and only her as they scared the others. They live in very poor conditions and dont have very much.
ReplyDelete
