Blog Response #11

Each novel has a setting or multiple settings.  How does your author create images of the setting?  If you had to describe the time/place of when your novel takes place, how would you do this?  Does the author use the setting to help develop the plot in your book?  What particular images does the author create that are memorable?  Is there a particular scene you can visualize, and why is this image so vivid?

**In response to the blogs, try to make connections with your novel's setting.  How is your setting similar to that of other books?

  1. Hitch Hikers Guide to the galaxy has two main settings. One is on the ship, and the other is on the ancient planet. The ship is described as an odd shape with odd geometric shapes inside. The setting on the ship has no effect on the pot of the book. On the other hand, the setting of the ancient planet sets the mood for the book. It is described as very dank and dusty, a sort of barren wasteland with thin, tinted air. This also leads to some foreshadowing in that the events following the discovery of the ancient planet are not good, as they nearly get caught and Arthur nearly gets killed. The most memorable part of my book is when they go into the room where earth 2 is being created. It is terrible hard to imagine as one cannot quite imagine a wall that spans over light years, but I can imagine the earth being created in the center of the room. They are mid-way through creating the planet, so they have just begun putting in the dinosaur bones. I can imagine the dusty yellow of rock being laid down as thousands of humanoids zip around laying down a layer of the earth. It is hard to imagine something so immense, but in trying to do so, this image stands out to me the most.

    1. Your book is not really like mine but it seems like a very far fetched book. Not a whole lot of connections between your book and mine but one that I can find is that there is probably quite a few questions that you had unanswered at the end of the book.

  2. In the book Wonder I would guess that the time took place in today's generation because the book literally hasn't been around that long. The authors imagery helps make that assumption because everything that happens in the book happen in today's world. I would say the setting helps develop the plot and I say this because if August didn't start going to school, he wouldn't be as confident as he is by the end of the book plus he would still have all the people not accepting him for who he is they would continue to judge him by his appearance. The most memorable imagery in the book is at the end when everyone was talking to him and giving high fives and then they had a fifth-grade graduation ceremony and August got a gold metal award and everyone stood up and were clapping, screaming and whistling also August friend Jack got everyone in the crowd to chant August name. The author made it easy to picture that scene.

    1. I'm reading Killing mr. griffin and in my book there is a girl called susan and in the beginning she wasn't popular at all but then a group of people started talking to her just to convince her to join their plan. And of course she joined because she liked the attention she got and finally she could talk to her crush. Overall i would say the group had bad influence on her.

    3. A small part of my book is the same in that it takes place in present time. This makes it a little bit more relatable but not by much, as my book takes place in the deepest corners of the universe. I guess that like in your book, I can see all of this being real, no matter how far out there it is.

  3. In the book Killing Mr. Griffin, the author, Lois Duncan, wrote that after a group of students kidnapped their English teacher in the parking lot at school, they took him to a secret place in the mountains where they tried to scare him so they can get better grades. The plan was to let him free after he begged, but he didn’t do that so they left him up there in the mountains for a few more hours. But it didn’t go as planned. Mr. Griffin died up there in the mountains and the kids buried his body. I imagine this pace not only on a sunny day, the grass is green butterflies are flying around and you can hear a waterfall, but also at night where you have to use a flashlight, almost everything is black and you have to watch out so you won’t take the wrong path.

    2. When reading my book, it was also completely out of no where. I expected it to be about one thing, then the earth was blown up, and the thing I expected to be in the book only appeared right before the end. I can also relate to my book in a small way, because I can only dream of the imagery in my book. Everything seems so surreal but I can still see it at the same time.

  6. In my book fast break it starts off when the main character Jayson is living on his own in the bad side of town with a really trashy apartment and it creates a sense of sadness because there is this middle school kid living on his own. Then when he goes into foster care he gets to live with people who are really rich and when he first gets in the new house he is speechless because of how nice it is and the way he describes that scene in the book its crazy because Jayson doesnt even know what to say.

    2. That would be kind of crazy having those two extremes in your life in such a short period of time. The main character in your books is kind of like mine except mine is adopted and doesn't know who his birth parents are and he is lost in time so its a little more far fetched than your book.

  7. In my book Found, the author margaret peterson haddix. Is very descriptive when Jonah, the main character. Goes to a different place the author describes what Jonah sees. In detail when he first walked into chips basement for the first time he described all what he was seeing. At the end of the book there was a scene where the two kidnappers were making each kid put there hand on the rock saying there was a big degree difference. But they were actually scanning the kids hands to make sure they were one of the thirty-six. The author made that scene really easy to see in my brain, its so vivid because its a powerful time in the book when the kids are trying to get kidnapped.

  8. One setting that I think the author describes very well is the stadium it sounds like the centerpiece of the town. I the imagery that he portrays about the field is amazing it sounds very expensive and very detailed. Another place that he describes is the town of Odessa which reminds me about a small town the revolves around football. The song country nation by brad paisley is what comes to mind when I think about Odessa.

  10. My book takes place in a small town along the water called marble-head in Essex county Massachusetts . The time period is late 90's through early 2000's . The author does a good job creating an image of the setting through describing the surroundings . The author definitely uses the setting as part of the plot . The setting is part of the plot because it effects the characters like Tess , Tess is a sailor so being near water and where she can do that is important otherwise she would be different . One part of the book that was very visual to me was the part where Tess was in her boat during a big storm . The author did a good creating the scene with describing the conditions of the storm and also talking about what Tess was feeling and how scared she was .

  12. In my book it has a specific setting! the author uses alot of ways to create image of the setting. First he uses description to describe not only the looks of the town but the politics of the town and kind of the worldly view of the town. He also uses the characters traits to describe the city by using Amir's talents as ways to insert visualization. For example, Amir loves to kite race and throughout the kite race tournament Amir saw the crowds watching from the rooftops and the streets packed with children. The setting in my book is not only the image of a town but the community of the town as well.

  13. in my book fallen angels the book takes place in Vietnam during the Vietnam war. The author is very good at imagery and showing the environment over there. He shows how humid it is and and he talks a lot about the jungle and the plants. The author is very good at putting an image in your head of the setting. Or even the battles or the gore in the book also makes you imagine being there in vietnam in this time.

  14. In my book, Before i Fall, the setting is mainly at the school or at the party. The book takes place in the 2000's. The setting of my book is definitely important to the plot because if Sam decided to go to a different area, the whole plot twists and changes. The one setting that stands out the most to me, is Kent's house during the party. There is always something that happens there and it helps the plot develop.

  15. In my book The Lovely Bones the author creates images of the setting by telling it through Susie's eyes while she's in heaven. If I had to guess the time of when this story took place I would say in the 80s or 90s just because of how the clothes and her school is described. The author creates a lot of memorable images in the book but one of them that stands out is when Susie is explaining how Mr. Harvey cut up her body into pieces. I visualize that scene but I also visualize the part where he puts her body into a safe and throughs it into the garbage pit.

  18. In my book Johnny got his gun there is a lot of settings that the author describes. It bounces around between the character being in his hospital bed for a large part, but he also is either camping in the woods with his dad, working on the railroad, or finally as of now he was working at a bakery. The author is very good at describing what the character sees and smells and how the character feels. He is great at describing the injures that Joe had received while working with the railroad. Overall it is a very descriptive book right now.

  19. My book dwells within the depths of the Moscow Metro tunnels. The way the author describes the setting is somewhat vivid. He talks about how old everything looks after the bombs dropped 20 years prior. Everything is makeshift and salvaged rubble from whatever people could grab. Darkness is a key factor, keeping people in check of their fears of the unknown. It is mostly described as a black hole, as many things go through the unlit tunnel systems never return. I remember the book described the remnants of a charred Tent city, where many tarps burned the people who lived in them, charred bodies stuck to the plastic and canvas, and screams echoed throughout the tunnels for months. The author can vividly describe a scene or not describe it very well like its a story, since the main character hasn't really been to many places and ventured out into the harsh tunnels.

  20. In my book For Whom The Bell Tolls, Ernest Hemingway describes the scenery in the surrounding Spanish mountains in a very descriptive and captivating way. His word choice describes the color of the sky to the grayness of the mountainside in such a visual way that you can easily imagine what it would look like. If i were to make someone aware of what time period they were in i would put in old land, mars looking new relative to the time period and the mode of transportation relative as well.

  21. In my book if i stay the setting in the novel is mostly in the hospital because she got in a car accident and is now in a coma. the author does a good job describing the hospital because you can kind of see the story as you are reading. the authors word choice makes you picture how she is laying in the hospital. the image i keep saying is her layin there in the bed with her boyfriend next to her and she decides to live and squeezes his hand and wakes up from the coma.

  22. I am reading prodigy and the way they describe the scenery is by the character June. June describes everything around her because she is a soldier. She also counts the in her head to see how long something takes. Most places that June goes are really easy to understand because she describes them so well. Some places that i remember the most are the train car they rode on, the tunnels, and there hideout.

  28. The author of my book creates images of the setting by describing it in detail. What it looks like, feels like, and what the location is like or how it got that way. To descried the setting of my novel I would date it back to the mid 1940’s and describe it with detail or something you can relate it to now a days because that is an easy way to understand. I think the author uses the setting to help develop the plot in the book because as the book goes along it talks about how Noah is redoing a house and making it look almost brand new and then how at the same time he and Allie are slowly coming back together. A certain scene from the book that I can visualize is when Noah is reading to Allie the notebook that he wrote pretty much their entire love story in. I visualize this one the most because I can see a man sitting next to his wife while she is in a retirement or nursing home because I work at one and I can kind of relate to it.

  31. The Author in my book creates a good image in my mind with the setting. Throughout the book he talks about walking and hiding in the brush. In my mind i think of a jungle/woodland area. I can picture tall trees and scrubs all over the place. I also picture think thorn bushes everywhere too. This image is the clearest with me, when Ishmael is fighting in the army against the rebels.

  32. In my book The Couple Next Door my author creates the setting by really describing how Anne is feeling. most of the time Anne is feeling sad and mad so you can picture the setting of a mother with no idea where her child is in a small quite house. The author does use the settings to create the plot. The image that the author created that really stuck in my head was when Anne realized that Cora was gone, I could picture her running around the house crying and screaming for her baby that wasn't there. This scene is so vivid for me because I watch a lot of crime episodes so when a child goes missing that's normally what the parents do.
