  1. I was reading a Thousand Splendid Suns and through out this whole book it brought out a lot of emotions. There culture is SO different then ours from their arranged marriages to they way they all behave is a lot different then our culture. what shocked me about this book was the Talibans rules for the women like they are not allowed to speak unless spoken too, cant make eye contact with men, and they cant laugh in public. I could not believe these rules they are just terrible. Through out this whole book I was basically mad about all of these rules that all the women have to follow. For example how Rasheed makes his wife wear that burqa so no one can see her face and how she cant leave the house with out him.

    1. I was reading the Kite runner and in the end of the book the Talibans showed up too. They shoot random people who were innocent, they just looked at the Taliban and got shot. I cant't believe how they treat some people and especially women over there.

    2. That would be horrible never being able to make eye contact with a man or being able to speak unless spoken too. Also not being able too laugh in public would be horrible.

  2. I’m done reading the book the kite runner now, and I think I have not only learned something about a different culture in another country, but also about friendship, forgiveness and love. Amir, the main character was living with his family (dad, servant) in Pakistan when he was 12 years old. He thought he knew everything about his country and he enjoyed living there with his friend Hassan. But after moving to America and living in San Fransisco for 20 years and then coming back to Afghanistan he realized that he was wrong. The Afghanistan, that he used to know was gone. He felt like a tourist in his home country. He gets to know the real Afghanistan and he realized that he has always been a tourist. I’ve also learned more about the Taliban, but they weren’t new to me because I’ve already read the book I’m Malala. I think it’s just horrible that they drive around and shoot innocent people.

    1. How quickly everything changed from being a nice respectable country to being completely run by the taliban was incredible. I learned the most about how Afghanistan was before the taliban took over because it was pretty much the same as the news reported it: a land with no rules unless someone suddenly decided they wanted some.

  3. i learned that other cultures are way different from our own culture. Other countries are way different than our country. what shocked me was how people came into the villages and just started killing all the innocent people. it seemed strange that that army was having kids fight the RUF. how could you ever trust little kids shooting guns and doing drugs. the book in general is crazy, it always seems like someone is dying.

    1. What book were you reading? And I can totally understand that two cultures can be very different. But that the army was using kids to fight is unacceptable.

    2. When the Taliban was in control of Afghanistan it was a lawless place. The kids were also fighting in Kite runner and they enlisted in the army when they were young. One of the driving forces of the Taliban was heroine and everyone was doing it. People die left and right, and it was portrayed in the same way as the news portrays the place.

    3. I could see it being strange to having kids fighting a war but they probably didn't have much chose.

Before reading Kite Runner I knew very little about Afghani culture. I expected it to be very different from American culture, but I was wrong. They have their own customs, which are different than ours but everyone comes together in the same way. There is a divide in the country due to religion, but it is actually not too far off of the racial divide in our own country. The biggest thing that shocked me was actually how normal it was in the beginning. I expected all of Afghanistan to be a bad place even before the Taliban took over. I really could not believe how quickly things turned bad, and how they went from fun soccer tournaments to executions in the same stadium in the the matter of a few decades. Why were people were people okay with public stonings, and why didn't they try to rise up? I was surprised at how everyone went from being proud of their country to sheep who follow whatever they are told.

    1. One thing that I didn't consider also was how nice it was before the Taliban took over it could almost of been a place in America. Then in a few decades they destroyed the county.

    6. That surprises me I would have thought that our culture would be really different compared to Afghani culture. I guess I could see that religion there divides the people and everything which is somewhat different from here.

  6. I learned that in Afghanistan that a man's pride and culture is a huge part of who he is as a man, also they really really love their tea. What shocked me was how much they looked down on a certain type of people just because they look different, because of their ethnicity. What seemed strange too me is how close and openly the rich were separated from the poor and they all just accepted it. The whole book was about Hassan and Amir and Amir just looked down on Hassan just because of his race like when Amir would read to Hassan he would be so cruel and mean to Hassan, just because of his race. One thing that also surprised me it may seem dumb was how much they drink tea they drink it with everything and they drink it very dark.

  7. What I learned about a different culture in Thousand Splendid Suns is that its normal for most women to get married when there only fifteen in Afghanistan. What shocked me was that in different parts of Afghanistan there was different things happing like one there was a war going but in another part it wasn't also some parts of Afghanistan women could wear makeup, high heels and nice clothes but where Mariam was from she had to wear a Burqa which covers her face and she couldn't put on makeup. What I couldn't believe was when Mariam dad let Mariam marry a forty-year-old man when she was only fifteen and she didn't want to marry him. Plus, not only did she have to marry Rasheed, but he beat her too. Rasheed so cruel to Mariam I was not a fan of him when I was reading the book especially when you read that Mariam's neighbors husband was so kind to his wife and cared so much about her ad then Mariam is like a servant to Rasheed. Overall the book was an interesting read and I like the ending of this book.

  9. In the book Kite runner social class played a big role because Haasan was Amirs servant. Amir was Haasans best friend, Haasan would of done anything for Amir but Amir would not do the same he kind of disowned Haasan after the rape incident happened, he even tried to talk his dad into getting new servants. Haasan and his dad ended up quitting. Baba was also Haasan's dad but kept it a secret because he was worried of what people might think because they were a lower social class.

    1. Your right. Social classes play a huge role in the book. If that secret would have spilled out, people would have thought differently of Baba and he wouldn't be that Baba that we know as the guy that everyone looks up too.

  10. The culture in the book Kite Runner is much different than the culture we have. What shocked me the most was marriage. I didn't realize that the father of the boy asked the father of the girl for permission or to allow the marriage to happen. That is very different from ours. The guys ask the girls to marry them. They don't make their dad do the tough work. Another thing that shocked me, was how worried about blood relationships they were. When getting married the father of the girl wouldn't allow the marriage if the father didn't like the guys family history. In the book Amir and Soraya got married, but when they adopted Sohrab, Soraya's father didn't like that because Sohrab was a different race. That caused some conflict. It just surprises me because in their culture they marry for blood and in our culture we marry for love. Our marriages are not arranged.

The 1st thing I learned about them is that thy ate a lot of rice and didn't like stuff that didn't contain rice, I thought it was kind of shocking and i thought that maybe they would be sick of rice and would want to try something new to them. The second thing i found out was they were very firm in believing stories that were told to them by older people in their villages.

The main part in the book where it talks about there religion and how they were treated was when Elie seen the bodies hanging with the life sucked out of them. Then ELie said i dont know if i can believe in God anymore because if their is a God why would he allow people to be treated like this.

  18. Something that surprised me in the book I Am Malala was that when a girl is born they don't celebrate the birth in fact in the book they describe the day as gloomy and sad. But when a boy is born they celebrate the birth and have all of these people come and give gifts. Another thing that shocked me was that in order for a women to leave the house a man has to be with them even if it is a five year old boy which seems crazy to me. The last thing that I couldn't believe is that when company comes over to somebody's house they have to welcome them in and cant tell them when to leave, the guests leave whenever they want to leave. All of these things really surprised me and I couldn't even imagine having to have that in our culture.

  19. In I Am Malala I've learned that Malala's culture is crazy compared to ours. Malala's culture is so strict, girls cant really do anything but stay at home and the boys can go do what ever they want. Something that shocked me along as something strange or I couldn't believe was that girls couldn't go to school, its basically like they weren't allowed to go. Only boys were able to and if girls had to go anywhere they would have to bring a male presents and when a male present is born they celebrate but when its a female present the wont celebrate. 20. The book taught me that we as a cuture are incredibly lucky to have the rights and freedoms we have in our current day. The pashtuns, in my book I Am Malala have very few freedoms and have a very hard time disputing the rights that they wish they could have, and to speak out to those who do not wish to change can mean death, such as when Malala is shot in the head for being a voice of hope and freedom

  26. After reading A Thousand Splendid Suns I have learned how completely opposite the Afghanistan Culture is compared to ours. The women over there get abused a lot, and there’s really nothing they can do about it. What shocked me was the fact that a 15 year old was forced to marry a man who was 30 years older than her, it was also very strange. I couldn’t believe how difficult it is to even do everyday things over there without being scared for your life or worrying about dying just y going outside or walking down the street. Overall I really enjoyed the book because it gave me a different perspective on the world.

  27. I read the book A Thousand Splendid Suns. What surprised me in the book is the way the women got treated. Also how females got married at a very young age to older men that they had o choose in. Like how Mariam who is 15 got forced to marry a 45 year old man. I couldn't imagine having my dad choose who i had to marry.

  28. By reading this novel I have learned a lot about the culture of the characters in my book. I have learned that women are seen very differently over there and how women are simply seen as property. It shocked me to read about specific incidences that would occur and how normal and legal it was to happen. One part of my book specifically was in the end how Laila was almost killed by her husband for talking to another man, that man being the love of her life and her childhood best friend. Her husband Rasheed had been chocking her and she would have died if the 1st wife marium had not killed him with a shovel. During this book I have had a variety of emotions, some parts were heartbreaking to read and shocking to know how difficult these peoples life is. I learned more about the other side of the Afghanistan war.

  29. After reading this novel, the culture of the people isn't very put out as much as it could be, but its still memorable. I remember that culture was very important to the Ishmael and his memories. Like when he was told about the festival about how he got his name. Describing the people and what they were doing and how happy they were during this time. Times have changed for Sierra Leone, so there were no times to celebrate during times of war.

  30. After reading A Thousand Splendid Suns, i was shocked to learn how the women were treated. They obviously aren't for equal rights. Women don't get to chose who they marry. When Mariam was only 15 she was forced to marry Rasheed who was between 40-45. She was then, what seemed like a live in maid. The woman have to cook, clean, and take care of children. If they are abused, they cannot say or do anything about it. At one point, Rasheed made Mariam eat rocks and she had no choice but to do it. I believe for their culture, men are superior and women are just convenience.
